Pilates

Born in Germany in 1880, Joseph H. Pilates was often sick as a child. His illnesses inspired him to study various forms of physical fitness such as boxing, diving, and gymnastics. From these studies he created a new exercise technique designed to stabilize imbalances that day-to-day life creates in our bodies. During his confinement in an infirmary in World War I, Pilates started a rehabilitation program for bedridden soldiers which he called “Contrology” (later popularized as the “Pilates Method”). Focusing on strengthening abdominal and back muscles while maintaining proper flexibility, he created a fitness regimen based upon 6 core principles: concentration, control, centering, precision, flow of movement, and breathing.

In the 1920s, Pilates’ opened a “Contrology” studio in New York City. His progressive methods of rehabilitation and fitness first became popular within the dance community, then with celebrities, and eventually with the general public. Pilates’ core principles of balancing mind and body through physical exercise made his fitness regimen increasingly popular through the decades. It is now taught worldwide in fitness classes, through videos and personal instruction.
